SLOW FILM ANALOGUE 11-15th May 2026, Eger, Hungary

ERASMUS BIP COURSES, ESZTERHÁZY KÁROLY CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY, INSTITUTE OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS

We are offering two Courses that will happen during the week SLOW FILM ANALOGUE. This week will be dedicated to archaic, traditional ways of image making, paired with the post-production aids of the digital era. The participants of the courses will explore the highly expressive and vulnerable nature of the celluloid, the texture of the schmalfilm (the „narrow-image”), its material and metaphysical aspects. Super 8 and 2x8mm cameras and material will be available and the footage exposed will be developed during the course. Quite a challenge, an in-camera-edit is also possible, as well as editing in follow-up sessions within one month after the Course.

QUESTION YOUR TEA SPOONS – A practical Introduction to Super 8 by MAJA MILIC – "Describe your street. Describe another street. Compare. Make an inventory of your pockets, of your bag. Ask yourself about the provenance, the use, what will become of each of the objects you take out. Question your tea spoons. What is there under your wallpaper?" – In this workshop, we take Georges Perec's* invitation to question-your-tea-spoons as a starting point for filmmaking. Working with Super8 material and hand- processing, students will construct short films from lists of ordinary, overlooked details, using everyday objects, places, gestures as the hidden structure for a poetic work. Through a series of guided prompts, participants will be led step by step, so no prior film experience is required – only curiosity about the textures of the daily. – *Georges Perec (1936–1982) was a French writer known for playful formal constraints and highly structured works like La Disparition and Life: A User’s Manual. - For an application for the Course, please contact the Erasmus referee at your University.

CELLULOID DREAMS – A Practical Introduction to cinematic dream sequences by KORNÉL SZILÁGYI (Aka Igor Buharov) – During the workshop, participants will gain insight into a form of Dadaist screenwriting, spiced with a free association method. We will familiarize ourselves with Double 8 and Double Super 8 cameras. (Basic settings, loading film, composition, focus/depth of field, using the light meter/aperture). Based on the completed script, we'll develop the scenes and bring them to life, then shoot. After filming, we'll learn how to use the Lomo developing tank and the eco-friendly Caffenol technique (Coffee, washing soda, and vitamin C). We will be scanning the films developed. Participants agree to help one another and take on every role, whether it would be directing, cinematography, or acting. – For an application for the Course, please contact the Erasmus referee at your University.
